According to Entertainment Weekly, the next book in the A\u00a0Song of Fire\u00a0and Ice<\/em>\u00a0series titled\u00a0The Winds of Winter\u00a0<\/em>is definitely going to be pushed back to after the premier of the new season of Game of Thrones.<\/p>\n

This is probably at the top of the list of “old news that I missed while out for the\u00a0holiday” but Game of Thrones is probably the biggest adaptation around right now so we’d be remiss in neglecting it. Martin claims that the time just got away from him and the writing just didn’t come together.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the writing did not go as fast or as well as I would have liked.\u00a0You can blame my travels or my blog posts or the distractions of other projects and the Cocteau and whatever, but maybe all that had an impact\u2026 you can blame my age, and maybe that had an impact too\u2026but if truth be told, sometimes the writing goes well and sometimes it doesn\u2019t, and that was true for me even when I was in my 20s. And as spring turned to summer, I was having more bad days than good ones. Around about August, I had to face facts: I was not going to be done by Halloween.<\/p>\n

It’s okay, George. We’ve all had rough years. I’m sure that by-and-large the fans will forgive and move on except a\u00a0few loud trolls.<\/p>\n

The most interesting thing about this from our perspective is that he claims there won’t be too many spoilers since the book and the movie are increasingly divergent properties. This leads to the question: how will it all end? Will the books and the show share a similar ending? Are we just taking different paths to the same inevitable conclusion? Or will Martin actually change the endings so as not to spoil the other version? At this point which one should we consider the original and which one is the adaptation?<\/p>\n

It’s hard to say exactly when (or if) we’ll be tackling the A Song of Fire and Ice\/Game of Thrones<\/em>\u00a0on an episode of the forthcoming podcast, but I really love how involved Martin is in the adaptation. It’s rare to have an author SO involved in adapting work for the screen.<\/p>\n
